Respiratory Building
2016
Scale: 12m2
Medium: White chalk on the wall

Large format drawing taking over the whole space of the former astronomical Observatory Building at the UCL campus in London. The architecture of the octagonal structure has been filled on the inside with words „breathe in” and „breathe out”. This performative drawing focuses on the processes of self-observation of the body and the analysis of the rhythm of breathing, which in my case is disturbed due to my health condition.

The trigger point for this work has become a hybrid of two tongues – Polish-English slang, Ponglish.
This cycle deals with the phenomenon of contemporary migration and relates to changes in the fabric of my native tongue – Polish, which began to evolve into new forms based on a large number of borrowings from English (UK, US, Australia, Canada).

The series visualizes linguistic collision and transformation as a process of language development and growth. It is a type of primer-book or a visual dictionary emphasizing issues related to the impact of socio-political changes that result from migratory movement and which then influence linguistic states.
